Cooker firm pays for poor product
NEW DELHI: As a consumer, Urmi A Nanchahal felt cheated after she discovered that the electric cooker she had bought at the trade fair did not meet the quality standards as promised by the company.
Several requests and rejoinders to the cooker company, Motherson International Private Limited, for refund went in vain. But, unlike many other consumers who would have given it up as a bad investment, Nanchahal took up the challenge and moved the consumer court.
Her plea was heard and the New Delhi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum ordered the cooker company to refund a sum of Rs 2,200 and pay an additional Rs 1,000 as compensation and cost of litigation.

Nanchahal had purchased the cooker at the India International Trade Fair in 2000. She paid Rs 1,200 at the spot and the balance was to be paid at the time of delivery.
Even during the purchase, she was promised that the cooker would be delivered at her house the next day. But it took her several calls to the company and 10 days before the product was finally delivered. The quality of the product was also sub-standard. Four months later, she sent a legal notice to the company for refund of the sale price of the cooker as well as compensation of Rs 25,000.
There was, however, no response from the company still. Following which, Nanchahal filed a complaint with the consumer court.
Holding the company guilty, the judges — L C Jain, R Narayana and Janak Juneja — ruled that the company had ‘‘failed to provide the sale service as assured to the complainant at the time of purchase.
